This Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli is a savory, stuffed bread roll filled with tender roast beef, sautéed bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and melted provolone cheese. Wrapped in a soft, fluffy bread dough and baked to golden perfection, this dish makes for a hearty and delicious meal perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough and Spread

  • 1 loaf Rhodes Frozen White Bread, thawed
  • â…“ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

Vegetables and Fillings

  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • ½ cup green bell pepper, diced
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • ½ cup mushrooms, sliced
  • Deli roast beef slices (enough to cover dough surface)
  • 6 slices provolone cheese

Toppings

  • â…› teaspoon garlic salt
  • â…› teaspoon sesame seeds
  • â…› teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Thaw Dough: Thaw frozen bread dough according to package instructions until doubled in size, preparing it for rolling and filling.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat, then sauté the diced green bell pepper, onion, and sliced mushrooms for 5-7 minutes until soft and caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool.
  3. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it.
  4. Roll Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the risen dough into a 12 by 18 inch rectangle, creating a base for the stromboli fillings.
  5. Prepare the Spread: Combine mayonnaise with garlic powder and spread evenly across the dough, leaving a half-inch border around the edges free of spread for sealing.
  6. Layer Fillings: Arrange deli roast beef slices evenly over the mayonnaise layer. Next, distribute the sautéed vegetables over the beef, then place the provolone cheese slices on top of the vegetables.
  7. Roll Stromboli: Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly jelly-roll style, tucking in the fillings as you go. Pinch the seam and the ends firmly to seal the stromboli completely.
  8. Prepare for Baking: Place the stromboli seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon butter and brush it over the top of the stromboli. Sprinkle garlic salt, sesame seeds, and dried parsley evenly on top.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the stromboli is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  10. Serve: Remove from oven and allow the stromboli to rest for 5 minutes before slicing with a serrated knife. Serve warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Make sure the dough is well thawed and has doubled in size for best texture.
  • Sautéed vegetables add flavor and moisture; be sure not to overcook them to maintain some texture.
  • The mayonnaise spread adds moisture and flavor but can be substituted for something lighter like mustard if desired.
  • Seal the stromboli tightly to prevent filling leakage during baking.
  • Use a thermometer to ensure the stromboli reaches safe internal temperature.
  • Allow the stromboli to rest before slicing to help the filling set and avoid spills.
