Ingredients
Scale
For the Doughnut Bars:
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
For the Maple Glaze:
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
- 1–2 tablespoons milk
- 1/4 teaspoon maple extract (optional, for stronger flavor)
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and ground nutmeg until evenly combined.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk, melted unsalted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and thoroughly mixed.
- Form the Dough: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until a dough forms, being careful not to overmix to keep the dough tender.
- Shape the Bars: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll it out to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a sharp knife or pastry cutter to cut into bars measuring approximately 3 by 1 inch.
- Heat Oil and Fry: Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the dough bars in batches, cooking each side for 1–2 minutes or until they turn golden brown and are cooked through. Remove them and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Prepare the Maple Glaze: In a medium bowl, whisk together the pure maple syrup, powdered sugar, melted butter, and milk until smooth and fully combined. Add maple extract if desired for a stronger maple flavor.
- Glaze the Donut Bars: While the donut bars are still warm, dip them into the maple glaze or drizzle the glaze over the top. Allow the glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a lower-fat alternative, these bars can be baked at 375°F (190°C) for 10–12 minutes before glazing.
