Ingredients
Scale
Mushrooms and Coating
- 8 oz whole button or cremini mushrooms, cleaned and dried
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- Salt to taste
- Oil for frying or spray for baking/air-frying
Garlic Butter (Optional)
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- 1 clove garlic, finely minced
- 1 tbsp chopped parsley
Instructions
- Prep mushrooms: Optionally remove the stems from the mushrooms but keep the caps whole. Pat the mushrooms dry thoroughly to ensure the coating sticks well.
- Set up coating stations: Prepare three bowls: Bowl 1 with flour; Bowl 2 with beaten eggs; Bowl 3 with panko breadcrumbs mixed together with garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt to taste.
- Coat mushrooms: Dredge each mushroom first in the flour, then dip it into the beaten eggs, and finally coat it thoroughly with the seasoned panko crumb mixture. Press the crumbs gently so they adhere well to the mushrooms.
- Cook mushrooms – Frying method: Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C). Fry the coated mushrooms in batches for approximately 2 to 3 minutes or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Cook mushrooms – Oven method: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the coated mushrooms on a greased baking sheet and lightly spray them with oil. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, flipping once halfway through cooking to ensure they crisp up evenly.
- Cook mushrooms – Air fryer method: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place the coated mushrooms in a single layer and air fry for 10 to 12 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through for even browning.
- Prepare garlic butter (optional): In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, finely minced garlic, and chopped parsley. Drizzle this garlic butter over the hot mushrooms or serve it on the side as a dipping sauce.
- Serve: Enjoy the crispy garlic mushroom bites immediately. They pair wonderfully with ranch dressing, garlic aioli, spicy mayo, or marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Make sure mushrooms are completely dry before coating to help the crust stick better.
- If using the frying method, monitor oil temperature carefully to avoid soggy mushrooms.
- The garlic butter topping is optional but adds a nice extra layer of flavor.
- You can substitute button mushrooms with cremini or baby bella mushrooms for a deeper flavor.
- For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs.
- These bites are best enjoyed fresh for maximum crispiness.
