Description
Crispy Fried Onion Rings are a classic snack or side dish made by coating sweet onion slices in a seasoned flour and breadcrumb mixture, then deep-frying them until golden and crunchy. Perfect for game day, barbecues, or as a tasty appetizer.
Ingredients
Scale
Onion Rings
- 1 large sweet onion
Coating
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- ¾ cup breadcrumbs
Frying
- Oil for frying (enough to fill deep pan about 2-3 inches)
Instructions
- Prepare the Onion Rings: Slice the large sweet onion into even rings of about ¼ to ½ inch thickness. Separate the rings carefully and set them aside on a plate.
- Prepare the Coating: In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, beat the egg with the milk until well combined. In a third bowl, pour the breadcrumbs.
- Coat the Rings: Take each onion ring and first dip it into the flour mixture, ensuring it is fully coated. Then dip it into the egg and milk mixture, and finally into the breadcrumbs to cover completely. Repeat this process for all the onion rings.
- Fry the Rings: Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C). Fry the coated onion rings in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook each batch for 3-4 minutes or until the onion rings turn golden brown and crispy. Remove them using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serve: Serve the crispy fried onion rings warm with ketchup, mayonnaise, or your preferred dipping sauce for a delicious appetizer or side.
Notes
- Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying to ensure crispy onion rings.
- Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in small batches for even cooking.
- Use sweet onions for best flavor and a milder taste.
- For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
- Keep the fried onion rings warm in a low oven while frying remaining batches.
