- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Spices and Seasonings
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tbsp soy sauce (optional)
Assembly
- 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
- 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese)
- Optional toppings: sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, extra onions and bell peppers
Instructions
- Heat Oil: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat to prepare for sautéing the chicken and vegetables.
- Cook Chicken: Add the thinly sliced chicken to the skillet and cook for about 5-7 minutes until fully cooked and no longer pink inside.
- Sauté Vegetables: Add the sliced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook with the chicken for an additional 5 minutes until vegetables are softened.
- Add Seasonings: Stir in minced garlic, paprika, salt, black pepper, dried oregano, and dried thyme. Cook the mixture for 1-2 minutes to let the flavors meld.
- Incorporate Soy Sauce: If using, add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and stir well to evenly coat the chicken and vegetables.
- Toast Rolls: Toast the hoagie or sub rolls lightly if desired to add a crisp texture.
- Add Cheese: Place a slice of provolone cheese on the bottom half of each toasted roll.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Pile the hot chicken mixture on top of the cheese-lined rolls.
- Melt Cheese: Broil or toast the assembled sandwiches for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and becomes gooey.
- Add Toppings: Add optional toppings such as sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, or extra onions and bell peppers as desired.
- Serve Hot: Serve the Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwiches immediately while warm for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- You can substitute chicken thighs for breast for juicier sandwiches.
- Soy sauce is optional but adds a nice umami depth.
- Feel free to experiment with different cheeses like American or mozzarella.
- To speed up cooking, slice the chicken thinly and keep vegetables similarly thin.
- For a spicier kick, add jalapeño slices inside the sandwich or in the sauté step.
