Description

Delicious and hearty Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwiches made with tender sliced chicken, sautéed onions and bell peppers, and melted provolone cheese served on toasted hoagie rolls. A flavorful twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak using chicken, seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal in just 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Vegetables

  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Spices and Seasonings

  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (optional)

Assembly

  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese)
  • Optional toppings: sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, extra onions and bell peppers

Instructions

  1. Heat Oil: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat to prepare for sautéing the chicken and vegetables.
  2. Cook Chicken: Add the thinly sliced chicken to the skillet and cook for about 5-7 minutes until fully cooked and no longer pink inside.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Add the sliced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook with the chicken for an additional 5 minutes until vegetables are softened.
  4. Add Seasonings: Stir in minced garlic, paprika, salt, black pepper, dried oregano, and dried thyme. Cook the mixture for 1-2 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  5. Incorporate Soy Sauce: If using, add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and stir well to evenly coat the chicken and vegetables.
  6. Toast Rolls: Toast the hoagie or sub rolls lightly if desired to add a crisp texture.
  7. Add Cheese: Place a slice of provolone cheese on the bottom half of each toasted roll.
  8. Assemble Sandwiches: Pile the hot chicken mixture on top of the cheese-lined rolls.
  9. Melt Cheese: Broil or toast the assembled sandwiches for 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and becomes gooey.
  10. Add Toppings: Add optional toppings such as sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, or extra onions and bell peppers as desired.
  11. Serve Hot: Serve the Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwiches immediately while warm for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • You can substitute chicken thighs for breast for juicier sandwiches.
  • Soy sauce is optional but adds a nice umami depth.
  • Feel free to experiment with different cheeses like American or mozzarella.
  • To speed up cooking, slice the chicken thinly and keep vegetables similarly thin.
  • For a spicier kick, add jalapeño slices inside the sandwich or in the sauté step.
