Description

Classic American Buttercream Frosting is a smooth, creamy, and fluffy frosting made from butter, powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla. Perfect for cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts, this frosting is easy to whip up with a stand mixer and can be customized to your desired consistency.

Ingredients

Scale

Buttercream Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 ounces heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Salt: In a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream 1 cup unsalted butter and ½ teaspoon salt on low speed until the mixture becomes pale and creamy, ensuring the butter is fully softened.
  2. Add Sugar and Cream Slowly: Gradually add 4 cups powdered sugar and 2 ounces heavy cream alternately and a little at a time while mixing continuously on low speed over approximately 3 minutes. Adjust the consistency by adding an extra ½ cup powdered sugar or 1 tablespoon heavy cream at a time as needed.
  3. Whip with Vanilla: Add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, then increase the mixer speed to high and whip for 2 to 3 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl every minute to ensure even mixing.
  4. Use or Store: Use the frosting immediately for decorating your desserts or store it in an airtight container to keep fresh for later use.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is softened to room temperature for smooth and easier mixing.
  • Adjust the consistency to your preference by varying the amount of powdered sugar or heavy cream.
  • This frosting works beautifully for piping decorations or simple spreading on cakes and cupcakes.
  • Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Bring to room temperature before using.
